  In this blog, we suggest that Chief Information Officers (CIOs) and Chief Financial Officers (CFOs) are essential to bring a Digital Transformation vision into a reality. Although Digital Transformation deals a lot with changing business operations, if technology releases are not able to push through, that vision will remain a dream and will not manifest itself. We will show how critical CFOs are in allowing technology to respond faster to continuous business changes, and how Cloud and DevOps are opportunities that cannot be overlooked.

  The Government of Canada (GC) buys a lot of stuff. In 2016, the total spent by the GC on goods and services was ~$16 billion. From an IT point of view, this spending can include big-ticket items like new data centres and new national applications costing tens of millions of dollars, but can also include low dollar value items like paying someone to build a small prototype over the course of a few days. This is part one of a series looking at how micro-procurements can bring IT and procurement folks together to enable agile, rapid, and scalable digital work.

  A summary of the ideas and concepts used by the IT Strategy team and the DTS (Digital Technology Solutions) team to deliver the Whitelist application using DevOps inspired principles and ideas. By using this model, the team was able to demo an application to the CIO within 10 days of starting work, and had users testing the application within 2 hours of Protected B cloud becoming available.

  There has been a large shift in our job as the technology organization of ESDC. We are now, more than ever, required to respond to exponential change in technology and requirements faster, cheaper and with higher quality. Gone are the days where we can plan projects 5-10 years in advance. We hear the term DevOps being used as a new paradigm for software delivery. However, it is difficult to picture how this actually looks in our organization in terms of a tangible item such as the release process.

  This year has been an exciting time for Strategy, Architecture and Business Relationships (SABR) within Innovation, Information and Technology Branch (IITB) from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC). Denis Skinner came to ESDC in June of 2018, who is presently the Director General of Strategy, Enterprise Architecture, and Business Relations within IITB. Upon his arrival two new teams were created: IT Strategy (yours truly) and IT Research. The challenge issued to these newly created teams was to help modernize a large impactful organization in the age of the notorious, and perhaps inappropriately named, “Digital Transformations”.
